Outdoor Course – 23rd & 30th June 2012

Yes! We are again going to to the outdoor course! This is for those who can climb indoors but would like feel confident on the real rocks outdoors – You will learn rope management, anchoring, belaying and lowering for seconding climbers, all about the different outdoor techniques and what gear to use and of course the safety precautions for the different types of rocks. The first Saturday (23/06/2012) does more the safety aspects; the second (30/06/2012) is really using the gear on the walls. For this reason, the two weekends are at different fantastic locations in the area.

This would be ideal training if you’re thinking about taking part in the Wiwanni Hut Climbing Trip! If you want some impressions of last year’s course have a look at the photos in the gallery and check out the post from last year’s course.

The price for members will be 25 EUR for both days! A maximum 10 of persons can join the course. Please send me an email if you want to participate. Who has currently signed up are:

Trip to Wiwanni Hut (2470m) July 2012

Climbing Trip to Wiwanni hut at 2470m

For all members who are interested, the trip is planned to be on the 6-8 July 2012. The price for this trip including accommodation is 25 €!!

While the focus of the trip is really more on alpine style climbing (climbing up a mountain on multi-pitch routes) there is also a lot of “usual climbing” / climbing gardens around the hut for those of you who are not into alpine climbing (again, see topos on the website).

Possible destinations basically sitting on the doorsteps of the hut are:
- Wiwannihorn (3001m) via “Steinadler”- Route (12 pitches) or “Ostgrat” (17 pitches), both not too difficult (mostly 4ish, one or two short 5a passages)
- Augstkummenhörner, multiple routes in different difficulties, most of them 4 (around 5 pitches each)

The planning would involve a long weekend and would be the following:

Friday
–> Early morning leaving Darmstadt around 05:00
–> Hiking up to Wiwannihut either using the direct trail
Saturday
–> Long mutlipitch route (Steinadler or Ostgrat) to Wiwannihorn
Sunday
–> Short multipitch climbing to Augstkummenhörner
–> Driving home, arriving late

For all who want to join the multipitch climbing (not as lead climber), the following skills are necessary:
–> Knowledge of belaying using HMS
–> Knowledge of efficient communication in alpine terrain
–> Feeling OK with a lot of air below
–> Being able to climb 5a difficulty (V+)

If you want to lead climb:
–> Lead climbing in 5a difficulty (V+)
–> Knowledge on how to build a redundant belay point
–> Belaying one or two guys from above

The routes are sufficiently well secured, so there is no need for mobile security devices (i.e. friends, nuts). However, we will bring some in any case.

In general, independent of whether or not you are lead climbing, I will organise an afternoon in an outdoor climbing area near Darmstadt where we can equally demonstrate our skills so that everybody can have a great time once we are doing “the real stuff” :)

Of course the whole thing really depends on the weather. If it turns out bad, we will cancel/postpone the trip.

If you are interested, please enlist at using the doodle. If you didn’t get the email details please contact Daniel Fischer or someone from the committee. – Sign up period closes 11th of May 2012.

Wiesbaden Club Night – April 2012

A small group found their way to Wiesbaden last week (11/04/2012) to check out the new “Wiesbadener Nordwand”. Quite a large hall with some nice routes and an archery range if you fell like shooting something instead. The routes are all very new and some of the scales caused some great debates between us whether the number was higher than anticipated, or the skills of each one of us trying to conquer the wall was lower than anticipated! I’m sure it won’t be our last visit. One of the younger members tried out the kids walls and quite liked the climb except for the soar hands the next day..

AGM 2011 (2nd Feb.2012)

High Rope Course / Hochseilgarten Darmstadt on Sept.3rd 2011

A small group of 9 had a great time in the Hochseilgarten on September 3rd 2011. For most, it was something completely new and different. The parcours catered for both the new and daring and we were all exhausted by the time we were finished. In fact, the ESOC climbing club were the last ones on the course as dusk set in.

Marti made the last big jump relying on the laws of physics to help him get through the last gauntlet rather than using the last quench of strength that was left after such a long day! It was great fun and will be surely organised eagerly again when the Winter is over!

OLD Post:

The date for the Hochseilgarten will be the 03/09/2011 at 15:00. We will meet there directly! If you’ve taking younger kids along, you may want to come earlier. I will try to be there at 14:00. Please add your name to the doodle so I can get an idea of how many people will be coming. Hopefully the weather will hold – you’re welcome to email me your mobile number just in case we need to postpone it due to the weather. See you there! Please check the website on how to get there: http://www.kletterwald-darmstadt.de/

Outdoor Course – 17th & 24th of September 2011

What a fanstatic course!

Thanks to all who made it happen

BrautBräutigam - Sept2011 - Alex1

BrautBräutigam - Sept2011 - Alex1

– We spent two weekends going from the basics of mounting and unmounting fixings, ropes & knots and everything you should know before hitting the real cliffs. It was challenging but also got us all hooked on climbing in the great outdoors. It got tricky as of the point when we were on the Braut & Bräutigam (Coords: 49,14614   7,77243). The fact that our instructor Eric, mentioned that he used to climb up as a kid without any ropes or fixings didn’t really make us fell more at ease! The sourroundings of the Pfalz were beautiful and I guess we’ll be coming back here quite often!
